Long before we knew we would be building a school and integrating stove construction into our K - 11 curriculum, we were building improved stoves in the community of San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala. We built this in 2006 because one of our neighbors was cooking over an open flame, indoors. The immediate purpose of this stove was to reduce the amount of firewood being consumed and to redirect the smoke out of the house. In addition, the family could expect to spend less money on firewood and medicine to treat upper respiratory infections. We also expected to save a few trees. Because we did not know we would be creating profiles for all of our projects at that time, we do not have the dimensions yet.
